The family of a suicidal baggage handler who hijacked an empty Alaska Airlines plane before taking it for a joyride and crashing to his death said they feel ‘stunned and heartbroken’. Richard Russell, a 29-year-old Horizon Air employee, was remembered in a family statement read out by friends at a news conference as a ‘faithful husband’ to his wife, Hannah, and a ‘good friend who was loved by everyone’. ‘It may seem difficult for those watching at home to believe, but he was a warm, compassionate man’.
