Buy a truck load of guns, get a free truck?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

GENESEO, Illinois – A Quad Cities Area business is planning a promotion that’s sure to be the target of debate. It’s hosting a truck-load sale. If you buy a truck-load of guns they’ll thrown in a military truck for free. News 8’s Chris Williams takes you to Geneseo for the story.

“These aren’t just a truck. They’re a truck”, said a grunting Mark Westrom. “This is one of those ‘my S.U.V. can kick your S.U.V.’s butt’ deals.”

Arma Lite president Westrom says the trucks are not the biggest deal here. After 12 years parking his collection in a Geneseo lot it’s finally time to part ways. He knows his idea of a truck-load sale is going to turn some heads.

“Truck-load sales are ordinarily so boring, it’s a truck load of furniture or something like that”, said Westrom

His company is world renown for a product that’s far from boring. Arma Lite makes firearms so mark came up with the idea to offer a free Army truck to any customer willing to buy a truck-load of his guns.

“It’s not funny”, explained Westrom of his gun deal. “It’s serious business. It’s serious socially and, even though there’s a tinge of humor in a truck-load sale of rifles, they’re very strictly regulated.”

Giant Oarfish trying to Warn Japan

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Japan is bracing itself for bad times after many extremely rare, giant Oarfish have washed ashore and been caught in coastal fisherman’s nets.

Sightings of these fish started after the ‘quake in Chile and the 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan. The recent tectonic shifting around the Pacific is raising concern that Japan is next.

The Oarfish is traditionally known as a messenger fish from the sea gods, and it’s tidings are usually grim. The fish can grow up to five metres in length and usually found at depths of 1, 000 ft. Long and slender with a dorsal fin that runs the length of it’s body.

According to folklore, the fish will come ashore and beach itself to warn of an impending earthquake and there are scientific theories that bottom-dwelling fish may very well be susceptible to movements in seismic fault lines and act in uncharacteristic ways in advance of an earthquake, although we do have the option to believe that or the constant high-tech monitoring of the tectonic plates beneath the surface. Fingers crossed those fish are just Godzilla and not something worse.

Seth Enslow breaks world record for longest jump on a Harley

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Seth Enslow has made history by setting a new world record for a long distance jump on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The Crusty Demons star broke Bubba Blackwell’s record set in Las Vegas 1999 by 18 feet (5.4m) with a jump of 183.7 feet (56m) at Sydney’s Barangaroo.

The jump was seen as recreating an unforgettable Harley Davidson benchmark set by Evel Knievel in 1975.

Enslow had to take the jump twice, after the viewing media missed the first jump.

The star was scheduled to make his record jump at 9.30am (AEDT) but he took the jump at 8.45am with only a third of the press there. He broke the record with that jump but was forced to take it again when he realized the press had missed it.

Luckily for him, he lengthened his lead by a further 8.7 feet (2.65m) on his second attempt.

Seth has a reputation for trying to break world records. He attempted the overall distance record back in 1999, riding a custom Honda bike.

In that attempt, he overshot his landing ramp and smashed his head against the handlebars of his bike, crushing his eye socket.

He has since made more record breaking attempts as part of the Crusty Demons Night of Records in 2008.

Hit the jump to watch the video of the world record jump!

8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

A deadly 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile early on Saturday morning. The earthquake has destroyed buildings, highways and bridges, and the death toll is above 200 and expected to rise. Due to the earthquake, a wide tsunami warning was put out to all countries on the Pacific Basin, including Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand, Central America and Pacific Island nation, although fears of a destructive wave are now passed. Chile has been hit with dozens of aftershock quakes, and President Michelle Bachelet has said that this event is “one of the worst tragedies in the last 50 years.”

Our thoughts go out to the people who have been effected in any way by this tragedy. More photos are after the jump.

A Perspective: How Deep is the deepest part of the Ocean?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

The deepest known part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, stretches 36,000 feet (11 kilometers) to the sea bed. I’m pretty sure this is where Megatron was dumped. It’s also where I stashed my my bike when I was 11, and told my mum it got stolen so I could get a new mountain bike. The perfect crime.

Post Update: My mum just read that and let the air out of my mountain bike tires.
