The New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils came to blows within the first second of the whistle. Three separate fights broke out continuing a long rivalry between the teams. Although this may be a big reason why people watch hockey, officials are looking at ways to reduce fighting.
The purpose of fighting is to protects star players from undue abuse. It forces dirty players to either stand up for themselves after a dirty play, or look gutless when they refuse to fight.
